A Conversation with Christine Goerke

An archived video recording of this event can be viewed here, on our YouTube channel.

March is Women's History Month, so what better time to have an engaging conversation with Christine Goerke, a.k.a. "Heldenmommy," one of the world's leading dramatic sopranos? Ms. Goerke will share her thoughts on performing Wagner's most challenging roles with us via an interactive Zoom session. Her Twitter handle ("Heldenmommy") comes from years of balancing the demands of travel and performing with her most important role: that of raising two daughters, ages 12 & 14.

Central to our spring Conversations Series theme of Art vs. Artist is the question:

How do we reconcile the work of an artist with a life and legacy that includes elements which sometimes profoundly challenge our contemporary values?

Please join us as Ms. Goerke discusses what it's like to sing major roles in the world's great opera houses, particularly in the controversial works of our favorite impresario, Richard Wagner. You're sure to enjoy her perspectives on:

  • portraying Wagnerian women
  • personal challenges such as balancing family and the travel demands required to perform all over the world
  • performing in a parking garage ("Parkingdämmerung")
  • and how technology is changing performance requirements.

There will be ample opportunity for Q&A with Ms. Goerke as well!

What a great way to end Women's History Month!
